Pilonidal Sinus

Pilonidal sinus is a chronic skin infection in the natal cleft (in between buttocks near the tailbone). It is more common in men than women and in between the age of 15 to 40 years. Obese and hairy people are more prone to pilonidal sinus.
Causes
Hairs often grown in natal cleft in between buttocks. The hair follicle infects and form abscess and it is called pilonidal sinus. Further, hair can be drawn into sinus and becomes recurrent.
Symptoms
Symptoms can vary from very mild to severe. The symptoms may include:
- Small hole or tunnel in between buttocks
- Large painful abscess
- Pus discharge
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is confirmed by a physical examination.
Treatment
In modern surgery lot of treatment options are available for pilonidal sinus like excision of tract and marsupilization, z plasty, rhomboid plasty.
